Our approach meets the student where he/she is, finds the edge of what is comfortable, and seeks to expand that edge- all in a spirit of exploration, joy and curiosity. Depending on the needs of the students and the goals of their parents, we might begin on the ground exploring the textures of the grass and soil, or engaged in play with a small animal. Or we might get up on a horse right away and begin our exploration from the saddle. Each session is unique, and is born out of the moment. While we do have goals to shape towards, our work together is done lightly, in the spirit of play.
And where do the horses come in?
Riding a horse calms, stabilizes and grounds the physical body, enabling the student to awaken to the world around them. It aligns the spine and energy systems and reduces cortisol, while simultaneously raising serotonin and oxytocin levels. This means the body is calmed, soothed, and flooded with pleasurable feelings. What's more, it allows the student to be carried in a way that is secure, grounded, and- at the faster speeds- full of joy! From this place the student can begin to engage in the exterior world, activate learning centres in the brain, and retain a powerful sense of calm that becomes a foundation that helps to stabilize sensory issues.
Having an experience of this kind with such a large animal is tremendously empowering, and has the ability to carry forwards into all areas of the student's life.
